WHERE WE BEGIN

philanthrōpía

GREEK · “PHILANTHROPY”

In its Greek origins, philanthropy means “Love of humanity.”

Its ethos reflects a belief in the dignity, interdependence, and sacredness of all.

Whatever our gift, we are called to give it and to dance for the renewal of the world. In return for the privilege of breath.

May all sentient beings enjoy happiness and the root of happiness.
May we be free from suffering and the root of suffering.
May we not be separated from the great happiness devoid of suffering.
May we dwell in great equanimity free from passion, aggression, and prejudice.
The Four Limitless Ones Prayer in Buddhism · Quoted in "The Places That Scare You" (book; Pema Chodron, 2001)

The group, however, did not all have these attributes; only some of them had these traits. But they had among them very great unity, the group all loved each other and held themselves tightly together. They did not want to separate from each other in order that some of them should go to the tree and the rest should stay behind-they did not want this, for they held themselves very much together. Instead they waited until the rest of them would work on themselves to attain the attributes so that they could all come to the tree.

“Try with all your hearts”, [‘Abdu’l‑Bahá] urged one audience, “to be willing channels for God’s Bounty. For I say unto you that He has chosen you to be His messengers of love throughout the world, to be His bearers of spiritual gifts to man, to be the means of spreading unity and concord on the earth.” “Perchance,” He remarked on another occasion, “God willing, this terrestrial world may become as a celestial mirror upon which we may behold the imprint of the traces of Divinity, and the fundamental qualities of a new creation may be reflected from the reality of love shining in human hearts.”

Power without love is reckless and abusive, and love without power is sentimental and anemic. Power at its best is love implementing the demands of justice, and justice at its best is power correcting everything that stands against love.
Martin Luther King Jr. · "Where Do We Go From Here" at the Eleventh Annual Conference of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (speech; 1967)

In the very earliest time, when both people and animals lived on earth, a person could become an animal if he wanted to and an animal could become a human being... There was a time when words were like magic... It would suddenly come alive and what people wanted to happen could happen—all you had to do was say it. Nobody could explain this: That's the way it was.

Miss no single opportunity of making some small sacrifice, here by a smiling look, there by a kindly word; always doing the smallest right and doing it all for love.
St. Thérèse of Lisieux · Catholicism
A human being is part of the whole called by us "the universe," a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings, as something separate from the rest—a kind of optical delusion of consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison, restricting us to our personal desires and affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening the circle of understanding and compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty.
Albert Einstein · Quoted in "The Places That Scare You" (book; Pema Chodron, 2001)
Looking up through a broad green leaf, its veins lit by the sun
Redeemed and restored, love returns us to the promise of everlasting life. When we love we can let our hearts speak.

What will be possible because we remembered?
Even in a world rapidly working to disconnect us from being human
We remembered
That even if someday we can no longer grow what we need from the soil
That we are still the soil
That we are made from the earth, water, and air
And so we protect them with our lives the way we protect each other...

I said, "This is my heart?" He said, "This is your heart, and it is the vastest thing in existence." He took it, as it was still in his hand, to the angelic regions, and I went with him, until I reached the treasury of the hidden of the hidden. I said, "Where are you taking it?" And he said, "To the world of eternity, so that I may look in it, and create the wonders of reality in it, and forever manifest myself in it with the attribute of divinity."
